Finally! Today’s Wordle is not quite so tough as the previous five, with WordleBot reporting that it has an average score of 3.8. You still might need some Wordle clues, though, because depending on your choice of start word it definitely has the potential to trip you up.
I’m a Wordle addict who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Wordle clues and hints to game #617 and bookmark this page so you can easily return tomorrow.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

P is a middling end letter in Wordle. It features in 56 answers, which places it 12th in the alphabet. Don’t expect it to happen that often compared to the likes of E, Y and T.

Wordle today (game #617) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #617, is… SYRUP.
I’m a little surprised this one only has an average score of 3.8, given it has the potential to be a little tricky. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not at the same difficulty level as the likes of FIFTY, ARBOR and RIPER, but I’d still have expected it to sit a little above 4.
S is a very common starting letter, admittedly – in fact it’s the most likely letter to find at the beginning of a Wordle answer – but Y is much more commonly found at the end than in position #2 as it is here, and P is a fairly uncommon ending letter. U is the least common of the five standard vowels, too.
Still, it’s far from an obscure word, and depending on your choice of the best Wordle starting words you have had relatively few choices to pick from. My own pick – STARE – was the one to go for today, as it left just 10 remaining answers. WordleBot’s favorites were much less useful: SLATE (69), CRANE (103), SLANT (96) and TRACE (77) were all pretty high, with only CARTE (31) narrowing things down much.
I say that I had 10 remaining answers, but really it was fewer than that, because WordleBot also includes solutions that have already appeared in the game. I didn’t even need to look at the list of past Wordle answers to recall that SCOUR, SHRUB and SHRUG had all featured in previous games. My list had just six on it: SYRUP, SCRIP, SPRIG, SURLY, SCRUM and SCRUB. WordleBot also suggested SCROD, but I doubt that’s really an answer.
SCRUB was my obvious choice for a second guess. It was one of the more likely words to actually be an answer and even if it was wrong, it would point the way to the actual solution either way and therefore guarantee me a 3/6. Why? Well if the first four letters turned green, but not the B, it would have to be SCRUM. If the first three were green, it would be SCRIP. And so on.
As it happens, I received a green R and U to go with my S, which left me with just SYRUP as a possible answer. I played that next go and duly scored my 3/6.

Wordle yesterday (game #616) – clues

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was F.
- There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was Y.
- Yesterday’s Wordle is a number.
Wordle yesterday (game #616) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #616, was… FIFTY.
I said on Friday that this was the week from Wordle hell, and it continued into the weekend. The run since Tuesday now reads RUDDY (average score: 4.3), RIPER (5.4), VAGUE (4.2), ARBOR (4.4) and FIFTY (4.5). That makes the average score over those five games a staggering 4.56!
I don’t have full figures for all games (not least because WordleBot didn’t start until a few months into 2021) but the only five-game sequence with a higher average than that was BOOZE (4.7), ALPHA (4.3), THYME (3.9), DOUBT (3.7) and PARER (6.3), and that average was lifted a lot by the final entry; there were two quite easy ones in the middle.
So let’s agree this is toughest run of games ever and hope that it gets easier. Or not – because a difficult Wordle is more fun than an easy one, right?
The biggest problem with this puzzle is that repeated F. There are only 22 games with that occurrence, so it’s really not that common and therefore quite hard to plan for.
The other issue is that none of the best Wordle starting words will be much help. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, was the pick of them: it left 45 possible solutions. But CRANE (357), SLANT (180) and TRACE (137) were all pretty awful and my choice of STARE left 119.
I’ve been in this situation before, of course, and knew to play POINT as my second word. This was also WordleBot’s choice, but it was unlucky today, leaving 14 answers remaining. That’s not a bad reduction from 119, but it’s still too many for this stage of the game.
I didn’t find that many possible answers myself, but I came up with eight: FILTH, WIDTH, HITCH, WITCH, DITCH, WITTY, DITTY and KITTY. The ones I missed included the actual answer, FIFTY, plus FIFTH, TIZZY, DIZZY, TIMID and BITTY.
WIDTH seemed like the best option, because W, D and H all appeared in multiple answers in my list. WordleBot agreed: it again said it would have done the same thing. But once again it said I was unlucky.
Was I? Well in a sense I was, because it wasn’t right. But it now left me with only three possible answers, so I couldn’t fail and lose my streak. KITTY, BITTY and FIFTY were my remaining choices and once again I chose the one which ruled out most options: KITTY.
And… you guessed it, WordleBot said that was the right choice, but also that it was unlucky. That left me with just one possible solution, FIFTY, and a score of 5/6. Amazingly, WordleBot rated my game at 99/99 today for skill – which I’m not sure I’ve ever achieved before – but just 28/99 for skill. Oh dear.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
