NHSE intervenes to delay North Cumbria EPR go-live until May

NHS England has stepped in to delay the go-live of an electronic patient record (EPR) at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC).

The trust signed a 10-year contract with Alcidion in February 2025 to roll out its Miya Precision EPR to enable mobile working, streamline patient flow, support clinical decision-making processes and provide clinicians with real-time access to a unified patient record.

NCIC was expected to roll out the system in March 2026, however in the lead-up, NHS England informed them that this could not go ahead.

A spokesperson for NCIC said: “Phase 1 of our EPR go-live was due to take place on Tuesday 3 March. Following national review, NHS England informed us in late February that unfortunately they were not able to approve any go-lives at the time.

“We had no significant local safety, technical or governance concerns and were on track for go-live. Following detailed replanning, we are now planning to go live in May subject to NHS England regional confirmation.

“Everybody at NCIC is committed to implementing the EPR for the benefit of our patients and colleagues.”

The confirmation of the 10-year contract followed a July 2024 announcement in which NCIC named Alcidion as the preferred bidder for its EPR.

Miya Precision will support care delivery across emergency, inpatient and outpatient services.

Clinical workflows will be complemented by the availability of a real-time patient flow management capability and extensive clinical documentation functionality that is designed to support all clinical roles in documenting patient care.

The use of the cloud-hosted, web-based solution will be extended through the provision of a smartphone based mobile app that will give care teams access to the full patient record.

Paul Deffley, UK managing director and chief medical officer at Alcidion, told Digital Health News: “The Alcidion team remains fully committed to supporting North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

“We will continue working closely with the trust to maximise benefits and ensure the EPR go-live progresses successfully when the time is right.”

In February this year, Digital Health News exclusively reported that York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust delayed the go-live of its Nervecentre EPR system.

A spokesperson said the decision was taken to pause implementation of phase one of its EPR “to focus on maximising elective activity and recovering urgent and emergency care performance after the winter”.

In January, Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group confirmed that it had delayed the go-live of its £88 million EPR system.

Ed Prosser-Snelling, interim group director of digital at the group, told Digital Health News that the programme had been delayed to ensure they “get it right”.

An EPR programme at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and Essex Partnership University Trust (EPUT), which was planned to go live between winter 2026 and spring 2027, is also expected to be delayed owing to risks “linked to system integration and programme complexity”.
